Hi, it's Subramanian Chidambaram here, and I'm going to share a story on How it all started!

My Childhood
I was born into a humble family in the beautiful temple city of Madurai. I was the only child of my parents. From childhood, I was inclined towards arts and drawing came to me effortlessly. All of my family, teachers, and friends appreciated my paintings. I still remember spending my summer vacation indoors, with my thoughts and a lot of colors, rather than going out and playing with my friends. I made sure that I completed a painting every week and hung it in my room.

My First Wow Moment!

In the life of every human, there is a particular event that will make you go wow and you tend to learn a lot and be inspired through them. One such incident happened to me when I was studying in the first standard.

After school, I was heading home when I noticed an artist drawing a mural of none other than our superstar Rajinikanth. It was for a Tamil movie - Maaveeran.

I'm talking about the early '80s here. At that time we didn't have digital banners and artists used to create murals and banners in front of theaters and in different parts of the cities for film promotion.

I was stunned by the person's artwork. The artist covered the wall with accurate and wonderful drawings of Rajnikanth in just a few strokes. Within an hour, the whole wall was filled with pictures and he went on to the next wall. I was surprised to the core, I stood there watching the whole masterpiece uncover without blinking. I went home and immediately tried it and to my surprise, the painting came out very well!

From then on, my quest to follow the mural artist was on. I used to search for the artists and closely observe them paint and try to replicate them. Some Days it will be murals and some days it will be a Hollywood movie banner like Jurassic park and terminator. I used to just look at the artist creating the mural and try to replicate it in my house on a piece of paper.

My very first art teacher

Cut to a few years down the lane.

I graduated as an engineer and have started working in the IT sector, just like 90% of the graduates at that time. It was a hefty paycheck and a good job at a reputable company. However, my love for art didn't reduce at any point. I was still painting. I was still working on my skills every day and completed my diploma in fine arts side-by-side!

Through one of my mutual friends I met my first teacher Bose Marudhu at the age of 24.I still remember, he saw my paintings and said “they are not up to the mark”

Throughout my childhood and teenage, I was appreciated and recognized as an artist in the family but this man here says otherwise. This is where my passion for painting started to take a new form.

Midnight Art Classes

Bose Marudhu, my Guru, agreed to teach me the nuances of painting like anatomy, grammar, and other techniques.

I used to complete my work around 6 pm and travel 40 km to learn from him. He used to teach me until 1 in the night and sometimes way beyond it and then I used to reach home, rest for a few hours and then head out to work. This was my routine for so many years.

Seeing my dedication, my Guru taught me some of the best techniques that I use and teach to my students to date. My art grew to perfection under his able guidance. This was just the beginning, I met multiple artists with their specialty and learned the nuances directly from them. After evolving, I tried recreating the master pieces of great artists like Rembrandt, Albert Durer, Mario Miranda just to put my skills to the test. The next stage is to create my own signature. I was always inspired by the stories of Haruki Murakami and Italo Calvino. Also, Vintage architecture and non linear storytelling were inspiring. So, I incorporated them in my creatives and consider it my own signature style.

Quitting IT to start SIDVIN ART CLASS

If you are passionate enough, the universe will send different teachers on your path and they will teach you what you need at that instance of time. This exactly happened in my life as I was exploring my talent. I also started to practice under revolutionary artists and gained expertise in different mediums. I am really grateful to all my masters that I found my master stroke, the gift inside my talent.

At one point, I got to work with cinema professionals. I started doing storyboards for films, book cover illustrations for some Tamil and English novels. I also started to do designing for corporate events and interior decoration for cafe shops and much more. I started painting murals and wall hangings for my close-knit circle. Through word of mouth, I started getting a lot of offers.

I was getting more orders for customized artworks every month from multiple clients. It was becoming tough to maintain my day job and focus on painting. This is when one of my friends suggested starting art classes and he was very much ready to enroll his children. I was married and had children, so quitting a day job was not an option. I started to teach painting on the weekends. Within a week, I got a place to start SIDVIN ART CLASS at the prime location. To my surprise, the number of students started to grow day-by-day and at one point, I will have to take 6 sets of classes on a single day. I came to know this is my calling, and I have to make it a full-time career. I quit my day job and became a full-time dedicated art teacher for students and adults. Initially it was scary to venture out, but I did it. From then on, it's been a growing curve.

How it's going now!

SIDVIN ART CLASS took a complete online form during the pandemic and post-pandemic we can reach a global audience. Right now I take classes for students across the globe from the UK, US, Canada and Australia. The Global Audience is growing every day.

Why did I choose to Teach?

Let me be honest with you. I have spent so many hours and sleepless nights learning the nuance of art. The process of learning is always tough and demands a lot of time.

For instance, I struggled a lot with watercolor painting. I was not able to create what I wanted using watercolors. I researched a lot. I searched for a master to teach me and read a lot of books to perfect this technique, but it was all in vain. It took me up to 6 years to land a book, where I got the whole insight of water coloring in just a single line. Today, I am teaching this technique to the students on day one!

Just like watercolor painting, I have invested so much in each and every medium of painting like acrylic, pen drawing, perspective drawing and much more to gain knowledge about the core concept and I'm really happy to pass it to my students.

This is why I choose to teach. I don't want my students, fellow painters, and artists of the future to go through a lot to learn the techniques. I am here to serve them on a silver plate so that it will nurture their talent. Yup, that's about me! If you want to enroll your child or try out painting then book a free demo class with me right away!
